Grade 1
This book is aimed at an absolute beginner.
Playing music is very similar to telling a story. In order to tell a story, you would need thorough knowledge of how to form sentences, the grammar, a good vocabulary of words etc. Overall, an excellent command over the language is required. Similarly, music as a language has certain prerequisites, which, when you have a good knowledge of, will help you play music well.
Consider the lessons in this book as your alphabets, grammar, words etc. which, when you have a good command over, will help you play songs on the guitar. Songs are nothing but fragments of different techniques combined together to form an aural image, pretty much like how an artist would paint a beautiful portrait using several different paint brushes, colours and strokes.
Grade 1 contains scales, chords & exercises which are extremely crucial for developing your skills as a musician and guitarist. The scales and exercises covered in this book will give you thorough knowledge about the fretboard and will enable you to get a good left & right hand co-ordination. This book also covers the major and minor chords which are accompanied with strumming lessons which will give you a good insight into how to lend a rhythm to a song. The audio files for strumming exercises are available for download in order to provide you with some auditory reference for the particular exercise. The arpeggiated chords section is the last section in this book & it’s bound to give you a good workout on playing broken chords. Covering each section of the book slowly and patiently along with memorising the notes of each scale will definitely prove to be a good stepping stone to get to the next level.

Grade 2
TheGuitarThing Grade 2 contains the Pentatonic Scale, the Blues scale, exercises as well as various other rhythmic ideas which will help you create your own riffs & licks. In addition, it covers Dominant 7th, Diminished, Augmented & Suspended chord shapes and progressions helping you build a better chord vocabulary.
Furthermore, emphasis is laid upon expanding your fretboard knowledge so that you are able to see the fretboard as one with notes laid out all over as opposed to seeing it as a string number & fret number. This will enable you to play scales, tunes etc anywhere on the fretboard. We also touch upon transposing scales & chord progressions so you are able to change the key of a song if you desire to do so. We have also included some ear-training exercises to help you improve your ability to identify a note using the guitar. You will be learning rhythms in different styles like Rock, Metal, Funk, Blues. (You can download free drum loops from this page so you can jam with it.)
Construction of scales using Circle of 5ths & 4ths will also help you better understand Music theory. All techniques related to Guitar such as String bending, Vibrato, Slide, Rake, Natural & Artificial Harmonics are covered in this book as well.
Last but not the least, there are 5 Songs in 5 different genres with transcription provided towards the end of this book. The tunes and backing tracks to play along are provided on our website. These songs utilise almost all the techniques and ideas showcased in the book to show you the practical usage of what you have learnt.
